Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark
A book review by Tim Bruck
For those that are not aware, Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark are the hosts of the massively popular podcast My Favorite Murder— a true crime comedy podcast that threads the needle brilliantly. Part dual memoir, part self-help, and just a tiny part true crime, Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered: The Definitive How-to Guide is their 2019 nonfiction book that definitely adds to the podcast experience. Honestly, if you don’t listen to My Favorite Murder, this book might be alienating, with the chapters consisting of a deep dive into their podcast catch phrases. However, Kilgariff and Hardstark do a wonderful job of exploring their obsession with true crime by connecting it to their personal past traumas and life hardships. Funny and immensely self-referential, the book balances comedy and serial killers with a deft hand and even manages to explore quite touching themes of self-doubt, self-sufficiency, and self-awareness (like the ease at which even the best-intentioned can victim blame). If any of this sounds interesting to you, I would recommend listening to the podcast first, then furthering your interest with the book. Though it may not be for everyone, Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered has some points to make and you may want to hear them out.
